A temporary carpark will be built for Bulli Hospital staff in a bid to ease traffic congestion on busy Hospital Road.

NSW Health Minister and Keira MP Ryan Park said work was due to start on Monday (19 August) to transform a parcel of empty land at the corner of the Princes Highway and Memorial Drive into a 17-space carpark.

He said the “more convenient parking solution” for staff was only 200 metres from the hospital and was expected to be operational by October.

Residents and staff have increasingly complained about the build-up of traffic and lack of parking on Hospital Road since the new Bulli Hospital and Aged Care Centre opened in August 2020.

In July last year, the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) introduced a free temporary shuttle bus service for staff, running from Bulli Showground where there are about 100 parking spaces. It later expanded the service to include carers and visitors.

Mr Park said other options to streamline the parking shortfall included extra spaces at Bulli Ambulance Station and timed parking on Hospital Road.

“We are working on long-term solutions and will continue to listen to the community and monitor the conditions in the vicinity of the hospital,” he said.

Work to build the carpark, on land owned by Transport for NSW, will include removing vegetation, constructing new pavement, widening the existing driveway and installing a boom gate, lights, signs, line-marking and fencing.

Work will be carried out between 7 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday, from Monday 19 August until Friday 27 September, weather permitting.

During work, single-lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place on the Princes Highway between 9:30 am and 2:30 pm.

The bus stop on the Princes Highway opposite Hospital Road will be temporarily relocated about 50 metres south during work.
