The countdown is on, and with mere days until the school holidays descend upon us, you may find yourself scrambling for ways to keep the kiddos entertained.

Fear not, while some activities do book out early (Squishmallow Bingo for some reason?) venues stretching from Helensburgh down to Kiama have put together a veritable smorgasbord of school holiday fun for your little ones.

Events and activities of all kinds cater to the quirky, the curious, the outdoorsy, the indoorsy and every kind of kiddo in between.

Overwhelmed? We don’t blame you. But don’t worry — we’ve got you. Here are 29 places doing awesome things these school holidays.

It’s not strictly in the Illawarra, but if you’re looking to make a family trip not too far away, venues across the South Coast will have fun and fascinating activations running throughout school holidays as part of the Fungi Feastival. These events are expected to book out, but a few options remain — enough to beckon you on a bit of a family road trip:

Early Start Discovery Space

Early Start Discovery Space might be a go-to year-round, but it beefs up the activities over the school holidays. Free with their entry, kids can participate in daily activities including “creARTivity”, where they will design and make their own bookmark using wax crayons and bright watercolour washes, go on insect scavenger hunts, create newspaper dress-ups, program Beebot robots, enjoy story time and more.

Lake Illawarra Hotel

At least a couple of days of the winter school holidays are sorted at Lake Illawarra Hotel with activities to keep your kids occupied while you enjoy some food and drinks in the bar and bistro. This includes a DIY Croc Jibbitz and Accessories Workshop on Sunday 6 July, where they’ll bring their favourite Crocs in for embellishment. Then, the “Curious Cookie Canvas” Christmas in July themed cookie decorating workshop on Thursday 10 July invites kids to bring to life a jumbo sugar cookie printed with a fun design using vibrant edible paint, sparkling edible glitter and tasty embellishments.

Burnetts on Barney

Burnetts on Barney has a few ways that kids can get crafty these school holidays, so you have every excuse to get your nursery and landscaping shopping done. While there, stop by The Quarry Cafe for a yummy lunch or beverage.

The Treat Factory

The Treat Factory offers a hands-on chocolate experience like no other, but sessions are booking out fast for two workshops held over the school holidays. In the DIY Giant Chocolate Freckle Workshop on 7 July, you’ll select a base of milk or dark Belgian chocolate, then bring your giant freckle to life with a colourful mix of toppings including sprinkles, freeze-dried fruit, nuts, mini marshmallows, party mix, pretzels and more. In the DIY Rocky Road Workshop on 8 July, you’ll take home your handmade rocky road, full of marshmallows, nuts, dried fruits, licorice, caramels and more.

Georgia Rose

From its “Curious Aquarium” workshop to a workshop that proved good creations often come in small packages, don’t miss Georgia Rose’s crafty school holidays line-up. Afterwards, grab a bite to eat at the beautiful waterfront location.

The Imaginarium

From Alice in Wonderland-themed crafts to paleontological activities and space exploration, don’t miss these (almost all) free activities across Shellharbour’s public libraries.

Wollongong Central

These school holidays, kids and LEGO enthusiasts of all ages are invited to use their imagination, build and play at the interactive LEGO Play Zone, outside David Jones at Wollongong Central. From imaginative free-play LEGO stations to fun interactive challenges, there is something for every builder, big or small. You’ll also get 20 per cent off all LEGO at David Jones. This is a great free activity to do between shopping that comes with a chance to win a holiday to LEGOLAND in Malaysia if you scan the QR code at the play zone.

Kiama Libraries

Most of Kiama Libraries’ awesome line-up of winter school holiday activities is now booked solid, but you can join the waitlists. If you’re fast, you can still get in to build an epic LEGO marble run at Kiama Library on 15 July or the Moonrise Cinema at Gerringong Library on 17 July. But before that, don’t miss the Outdoor Library” on 12 July from noon to 8 pm on Terralong Street. Part of Kiama Winter Street Festival, it includes a library stall with bookish treats, a scavenger hunt, personalised poetry with Butch Schwarzkopf, felt crown workshop and paper lantern workshops. Better yet, registration is not required — just drop in.

Science Space

There is so much happening at Science Space these school holidays – plan an action-packed Jurassic-themed visit or book a full-day experience on one of its curiosity days. These include LEGO Jurassic Film Making on Tuesday 8 July, Jurassic Park Designers on Thursday 10 July or Dino Detectives on Wednesday 16 July. Other school holiday activities include baby dinosaur encounters, a Jurassic construct-it zone, a fossil dig and fossil hunter sessions.

Wollongong Art Gallery

Wollongong Art Gallery’s always-popular school holiday program books out fast, but on Tuesday 8 July, requiring no booking at all, you can drop in to the free Stencil Stories printmaking activity. Families can use the gallery’s ready-to-go stencils or design their own to create a one-of-a-kind print to take home. There are also a few spots left for the Marks of Nature: Advanced Art Workshop for teens aged 15 to 18 years on Wednesday 16 July. Participants will explore the textures, patterns and beauty of the natural world through expressive mark-making in this immersive workshop.

The Illawarra Light Railway Museum will run extra sessions over the school holidays, giving kids more chances to discover the joys of locomotives from yesteryear. Ride old trains, the mini train, have a picnic, play in the playground, grab a bite to eat at the cafe, explore the museum and go on tours. School holiday open days are:

Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club

Join illustrator and graphic designer Matthew Lin in a fun step-by-step workshop to create characters from your favourite anime, manga or Pokemon; or Bec Lea of White Clay Mountain and learn how to create your own polymer clay beads and letters to make a personalised bracelet and/or keyring, in these two artsy, crafty workshops at Shellhabrour Civic Centre:

Expressive Art Experience

On Wednesday 9 July, have fun with big cats at Sh-Cool Jungle Cats. You’ll learn the best ways to make bright backgrounds before using stencils and brush work to create a story for your art. Then on Monday 14 July, Expressive Art experts will take you through making your own colourful dream catcher. You’ll have step-by-step guidance with all materials included and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere suitable for all experience levels.

Creative Journeys offers a safe, welcoming space for children and teens to explore emotions, build confidence and express themselves through drawing, sculpting, and other hands-on creative materials. This marvellous School Holiday Art Therapy Program comes in two stages:

Do you have a creative kiddo in your life who would love to learn to sew? Timbermill Studios hosts two beginner-friendly sewing workshops these school holidays. They’ll learn the fundamentals of safely using a sewing machine and other required tools, how to sew a straight seam, how to use a hot iron to finish a project and how to insert a zipper. There are four sessions over three days:

Bundanon offers two exciting, arty opportunities for kids these school holidays:

  • Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 July, 9 am to 5 pm: The free Bundanon Inspire School Holiday Program offers young people aged 12 to 18 two epic days of artmaking, ecology walks and visits to the Art Museum. Registration includes bus transfer from Nowra, Art Museum entry, catering and all artmaking supplies.
  • Wednesday 16 and Friday 18 July, 10 am to 2 pm: Bundanon’s Family Fun Day Artmaking Workshop invites children and adults to experience a guided visit to the Art Museum and new exhibitions Betty Kuntiwa Pumani: maḻatja-maḻatja (those who come after) and David Sequeira: The Shape of Music. After, participants will come together to collaborate in a painting workshop and create their own artwork. This program is designed for five to 12 years and their carers.

Kiama Art Workshops is holding two events suitable for children these school holidays. The School Holiday Creative Camp on Tuesday 15 July is suitable for children aged six to 12 and invites kids to paint a mug, make loaded hot chocolates, play games and dance the day away. The Driftwood Creations workshop on Thursday 17 July is suitable for kids aged eight and over. Kids will create beautiful, natural, sculptural driftwood decorations using a range of natural and recycled materials, learn various construction techniques and use a selection of tools including hot glue guns.

Lake Illawarra South Public School

Code Camp is coming to Lake Illawarra with two of its amazing programs for future coders. Curious Minds is an introduction to STEAM subjects, inviting kids aged five to seven to discover how science and technology are shaping our world with fun and creative activities. Minecraft Masters is suitable for returning students aged seven to 12 who have already taken the Minecraft Engineers basic course, building on foundational engineering principles and command-based programming to jump into an exciting new project.

UOW Children’s Technology Play Space

This school holidays, a small group of enthusiastic children (aged six to eight) are invited to become digital explorers in a groundbreaking series of interactive workshops designed to uncover how young minds engage with the challenges and opportunities of the online world. Led by University of Wollongong’s (UOW) School of Education research fellows Dr Rebecca Ng and Dr Claire Rogerson, these fun and engaging sessions will give children a voice in the ongoing conversations about their digital life and help shape future research on how they can be best supported in a connected age. Participants will be immersed in a world of creativity and discovery, and receive a $50 book voucher as a thank you for their valuable time and contributions.

At Green Connect’s winter school holidays Play & Picnic Day, you’ll spend up to three hours in the beautiful Children’s Garden where kids have lots of choice for free play, including the sandpit, mud kitchen, recycled and natural loose parts and more. You’ll also head out on two mini farm tours, offered in small groups throughout the session, to meet and feed the farm pigs, sheep, goats and chickens, explore the organic market gardens, smell the compost and learn about how the farm grows food sustainably. Bring a waste-free snack and a small picnic rug (if you don’t want to sit on the grass, rocks or logs) to make the most of what is sure to be a fun and enriching morning.
