Police have arrested an Albion Park man after a 25-year-old Warrawong man was allegedly doused in a fire accelerant and set alight on Monday night (11 May).

Emergency services were called to a unit block in Todd Street around 9 pm on Monday after reports of a fire and were faced with what police allege was the result of a ”very violent, very direct attack”.

Lake Illawarra Police District Detective Chief Inspector Brad Ainsworth said the occupant of a unit was allegedly doused in an accelerant which was then ignited.

Inspector Ainsworth said the 25-year-old alleged victim suffered severe burns to 50 per cent of his body, from his upper torso to his legs.

The man was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The alleged offender ran from the scene and investigations into the incident began.

On Tuesday (12 May), police appealed to the public for any information that could help them find the alleged offender.

However, later the same day police arrested a 32-year-old man at a home in Scarborough Circuit at Albion Park.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with throw or lay down explosive with intent maim or do grievous bodily harm.
