Illawarra e-bike and e-scooter users have received almost a dozen infringement notices as part of a high-visibility police operation on Saturday (25 May).
Launched this month (May), Operation Spark is aimed at educating and encouraging safe riding practices for e-scooter and e-bike users, a NSW Police spokesperson said.
“Officers attached to Wollongong Traffic and Highway Patrol, with assistance from Wollongong Police District and Youth Command, Wollongong City Council and scooter operator, Neuron, conducted an operation on 25 May along the Blue Mile on Cliff Road, Wollongong, as well as patrols in high traffic locations in Bulli and Woonona,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“As a result of the operation 11 traffic Infringement notices were issued, along with five warnings, 17 youth warnings, six random breath tests and random drugs tests with one positive result and five traffic charges.”
Officers from Youth Command and the Wollongong Highway Patrol also went to local high schools to educate students on e-bike and e-scooter safety.
“On Tuesday 21 May and Wednesday 22 May, Youth Command with assistance from Wollongong Highway Patrol attended Bulli and Woonona high schools to educate school students on safety, when using e-bikes and e-scooters,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“Operation Spark is ongoing, with education sessions and operations planned in the future.”
