Illawarra’s young financial professional Adam Karayiannis was humbled and motivated by being named 2024 Customer Owned Banking Association’s (COBA) Emerging Leader from a record-breaking field of 88 young professionals nationwide.

The 23-year-old IMB management accountant said it was an honour to be recognised as part of the next generation of leaders in the customer-owned banking sector, showcasing not only his individual achievements but how the Illawarra was growing as a hub for financial innovation and leadership.

“Finance has always been an area I enjoy as it gives me the opportunity to influence strategy for the benefit of key stakeholders,” Adam said.

“Doing what I am passionate about at a bank that serves the Illawarra region is a strong motivator and I am committed to leading a future of positive change for our members and the broader community.”

The COBA Emerging Leader program has been running for 22 years to nurture and empower aspiring young professionals, with this year it’s largest program ever, with the 88 participants coming from 28 mutual banks and credit unions around the country.

Each year it announces its emerging leader at its annual COBA Convention, which this year was held in Adelaide in September.

During the event, Adam received the award for driving positive change within his team, organisation and for the customers they serve.

“I feel empowered to continue driving the growth of IMB Bank in the future,” Adam said.

“The award is a huge testament to the guidance and support that IMB’s current leadership offer young aspiring leaders, so it is equally rewarding for them to know that their investment in career growth and development is paying off.”

COBA CEO Mike Lawrence said the emerging leaders program wasn’t just about recognising talent, but about cultivating the future of customer-owned banking.

“Adam Karayiannis’ award exemplifies this – his dedication to drive positive change within his team, organisation and the wider industry demonstrates the powerful impact of young leaders who are empowered to drive progress,” Mike said.

Adam was selected by a committee which included Michael, and he accepted the award in front of 1100 delegates at the annual convention.

As part of his prize, he wins up to $10,000, which was sponsored by Bridges Financial Services, to attend an industry conference or professional development course of his choosing, either domestically or internationally.
