The M1 Princes Motorway and Picton Road will be closed to all traffic on a number of nights from Sunday 3 November to allow work on the Mt Ousley Interchange.

The motorway will be closed from Bulli Pass to Memorial Drive, as well as Picton Road from the motorway to Almond Street at Wilton.

The closures are planned from 8 pm to 4 am on Sunday 3 November, Monday 4 November and Wednesday 6 November, as well as Sunday 10 November, Monday 11 November and Wednesday 13 November.

During the closures, the following detours will be in place:

  • Light and heavy vehicles less than 19 metres long and under 50.5 tonnes, travelling between Wollongong and Bulli Tops, can detour via Memorial Drive and Bulli Pass
  • Heavy vehicles more than 19 metres long will not be able to access Bulli Pass and are advised to delay their journey, or be parked up
  • Road users travelling between Wollongong and the Hume Motorway can detour via Memorial Drive, Bulli Pass, Appin Road, or the Illawarra Highway (Macquarie Pass). Light vehicles can also detour via Wilton Road (Broughton Pass).

Transport for NSW said if the road closures did not occur due to weather, they would be rescheduled for the following fortnight.

Work during the closure will include extensive removal of vegetation adjacent to the motorway and in some surrounding streets including Mount Ousley Road, Dumfries Avenue and Falder Place.

Part of the southbound noise wall will be removed and a temporary noise wall installed between Northwood Road and Dumfries Avenue.

Site access gates will be built off Mount Ousley Road between Gaynor Avenue and the motorway and off the motorway between Mount Ousley Road and Northfields Avenue.

During the closures Transport for NSW will also be carrying out maintenance work on the motorway between Bulli Tops and Memorial Drive and on Picton Road between the motorway and Almond Street at Wilton.

Work will include vegetation removal, guardrail repairs, pavement testing, line marking and cleaning drains to improve safety.

At times full lane closures will be in place for the Princes Highway between New Mount Pleasant Road and Memorial Drive, the northbound M1 on and off ramps at Northfields Avenue and on Irvine Street between Madoline Street and Northfields Avenue. Single lane closures and stop slow conditions will apply at other locations.

Transport for NSW Coordinator General Howard Collins said motorists would need to plan ahead, with significant disruption expected as a result of the night closures.

“We want everyone who uses the Princes Motorway to be aware of these closures and to understand their impact between November 3 and 13,” Mr Collins said.

“While building the Mount Ousley Interchange we need to work at night to minimise the traffic disruption and to helps ensure the safety of workers and all road users.

“These upcoming closures will be frustrating for some but the work being done during this time will pave the way for major project construction to get underway, which when complete will make life easier for all motorists using this part of the M1.”

Electronic message signs and livetraffic.com will advertise road closure dates in advance and any changes to dates due to weather impacts.
