David ‘Macca’ McFarland knows what can happen when busy men force their health and wellbeing to take a back seat in life. It can and does lead to tragedy.
That’s why events like an upcoming luncheon themed Health is Your Wealth, are so important.
Set to kick off on 23 January 2025, the INSPIRE Gala luncheon for men is an event that bundles education, networking and fundraising into one epic afternoon.
Championing men’s health and wellbeing with good food, good company, hilarious comedy and powerful speakers from all walks of life, it’s hosted by the ARHG Foundation, the not-for-profit organisation behind the highly anticipated Festival of FUN.
Macca says it’s a prime opportunity to get guys talking about their physical and mental health, and have a conversation about how they affect one another.
“Your health is indeed your most important form of wealth, so it’s crucial to take some time out to rest and recharge,” he says.
“This looks different for everyone. It could mean catching up with friends, playing some sport, taking a spa day or even practising some meditation.
“But a lot of people don’t do this. We see many men, and women too, who are so busy with family and work commitments that the last thing they focus on is their health. They’re ending up with major health issues or worse, they’re dying.”
The ARHG Foundation runs three events in the INSPIRE series – a men’s luncheon, a women’s luncheon and a gala dinner that brings everyone together to celebrate.
In the lead up to the Festival of FUN’s Wollongong debut, Macca says events like these are of course a chance to raise funds, but they are also critical in raising awareness and working towards a more connected, accessible world for all.
“Our Festival of FUN is a fully accessible, family-friendly event designed to unite people of all abilities,” Macca says.
“The festival costs around $300,000 to put on, depending on the talent we procure. We have a number of sponsors to help us get there, who are all amazing, and our INSPIRE events help make up the difference.
“But this isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s a chance for guys from all over Wollongong and beyond to come together and connect on a deep level, share their stories, listen to the lived experiences of others, and advocate for all men to make their physical and mental health a priority in their lives.”
A fundraising goal of $100,000 has been set for the upcoming men’s luncheon, which as well as entertainment and a three-course meal, will feature a silent auction, raffle prizes and a live auction.
Past events have featured plenty of top-calibre speakers, including Australian comedian Vince Sorrenti, tennis star Jelena Dokic, UFC champion Alex Volkanovski and AFL legend David Schwarz.
“Vince Sorrenti enjoyed himself so much at our last luncheon he’s coming back as our MC in 2025,” Macca says.
“We will also have local solicitor and all-round hero Graham Lancaster, who has recently been diagnosed with Parkinsons, talking about his experience alongside a number of other powerful speakers to be announced soon.
“Whether you’re a businessman, global superstar, family man or prime athlete, everyone goes through something. We want to show all men that it is possible, and worth it, to get through the darkness and come out the other side.”
The INSPIRE Gala luncheon for men will run from 12 to 3 pm on Thursday 23 January, 2025.
