Corrimal will soon join a growing list of suburbs with its own street library.
Now the search is on for a local artist to create the artwork for the book box to be installed later this year at Luke’s Place Playground in Corrimal.
The successful artist will be commissioned to design an original artwork that will be scaled and/or cropped to size, and digitally wrapped around the new street library.
The successful artist will receive $1500 to acknowledge their artistic contribution to the city.
Submissions are open until 5 pm on Thursday, 13 July.
Street libraries have grown in popularity around the world, particularly during COVID lockdowns. People don’t need to join or have a library card to take a book. Once finished, the books can be returned or passed on to other readers. And if residents have any books they are finished with, they can be returned to any street library.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said this was an opportunity for local artists to flex their creative muscles.
“Artists can use any medium that can be easily photographed and translated into a digital image,” Cr Bradbery said.
“Street Libraries are a fantastic piece of community infrastructure that encourage people to take a book or leave a book for free. It’s a real communal project that has been met by lots of positive feedback from the community.”
Council’s street libraries can also be found at Beaton Park Leisure Centre; Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre, Bulli Senior Citizens Centre; Cringila Community Halls; lower Crown Street Mall near Kembla St; Dapto Public Pool; Port Kembla Community Centre; Stanwell Park Children’s Centre; Warrawong Community Centre; and Wollongong Botanic Garden.
