Police have pursued a vehicle through the Illawarra’s northern suburbs before arresting the driver on foot after he failed to stop for speed enforcement officers at Waterfall on Thursday (16 January) in the region’s second pursuit that morning.

Wollongong Traffic and Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a black Toyota Aurion that was detected allegedly speeding around 6 am but initiated a pursuit after the driver failed to stop.

The pursuit then continued on the Old Princes Highway through Helensburgh, Darkes Forrest, Bulli Tops and towards Wollongong.

Officers successfully deployed tyre-deflation spikes at Mount Ousley, but the vehicle continued through Fairy Meadow and Corrimal before it failed to negotiate a turn and crashed.

A 38-year-old man was arrested following a short foot pursuit and taken to Wollongong Police Station.

The man was charged with five offences, including police pursuit – speed exceeded more than 45 km/h, driving while disqualified (second offence), possessing housebreaking implements and the vehicle not complying with standards.

He was refused bail and appeared before Wollongong Local Court on Thursday, where he was again refused bail to reappear on Tuesday 21 January.

The pursuit marked the second in the region on Thursday morning, with another vehicle failing to stop for officers in North Wollongong before crashing into the concrete barrier on the hairpin bend at the M1 Princes Motorway on ramp.
