Shellharbour lifeguards have claimed victory in a friendly annual head-to-head competition against teams from the region’s four local councils.

The Annual Lifeguard Challenge saw 66 lifeguards from Wollongong City Council, Shellharbour City Council, Kiama Municipal Council and Shoalhaven City Council compete in events in and out of the water including a run, swim tag, water paddle and rescue.

Dozens of teams competed in the challenge on 30 January at Kiama’s Surf Beach with each team consisting of six lifeguards which included at least one female member and one member aged over 27.

Another win marked a hattrick of titles for Shellharbour, which came out on top for the third year in a row, while a second Shellharbour team took home silver in this year’s competition, and a team from Wollongong walked away with bronze.

Shellharbour Mayor Chris Homer, who was formerly a lifeguard himself, was unsurprised by the impressive result.

“Here at Shellharbour City Council, we are incredibly proud of our hardworking lifeguards,” Mayor Homer said.

“They do such an amazing job in keeping both locals and tourists alike safe over the busy summer season.

“Well done to all involved in the Annual Lifeguard Challenge.”

The event marks an opportunity for the region’s professional lifeguards to come together and celebrate after the peak of the busy summer season protecting the community at our beaches and pools.

Around 160 lifeguards work across the four councils, alongside volunteer surf lifesavers right throughout the Illawarra and South Coast.

Shellharbour’s lifeguards have been among those hard at work, patrolling Blacks Beach, Shellharbour North and Shellharbour South, and Warilla North, Central, and South beaches, with 32 rescues completed in the 2024/25 season.
