Fostering a foundation of inclusivity and connection across the Illawarra is the aim of the Flagstaff Group’s free community event tomorrow (12 February) as part of its ‘We Belong’ program.

Expected to attract carers, family members and people of all abilities, the event at Wests Illawarra will explore ways the community has embraced all abilities while discussing how to continue to nurture a spirit of inclusivity across the region.

Guest speakers will share practical ways to build a welcoming community for all and share stories highlighting how to help shape an inclusive Illawarra.

They include Tim Lewis from Gateway Life, Christine Okinowski from Lived Experience, Ken Garcia from iBOX Fitness, and Flagstaff Group CEO Rodney Von Clark.

Rodney said ‘We Belong’, co-designed with people living with disability, was a program established to support people with disabilities in being more included in community groups and clubs.

“This evening will provide practical ideas on how to be an inclusive club or join a club and feel welcomed,” Rodney said.

“Flagstaff aims to raise awareness for a future where inclusivity is customary.

“Through ‘We Belong’, challenges such as barriers to joining local community events and amplifying the voices of people with disability are reduced.”

During his address at the event, he will speak about its integrated employment model and provide an update concerning Flagstaff’s Fire Recovery Stage after a devastating fire ripped through its laundry and fine food businesses on Nolan Street in Unanderra on Boxing Day.

Meanwhile, Gateway Life general manager Tim Lewis will share his experience celebrating others through the extensive facilities and services available at the gym and allied health clinic.

As a person living with disability, Christine Okinowski will provide insight into how she actively participates in the Berkeley community as a board member and gardening group facilitator.

Christine is leading by example, inspiring others to pursue an inclusive Illawarra.

Those passionate about learning how others are paving the way for a more inclusive future – and are eager to connect, raise awareness and inspire greater inclusivity in the Illawarra – are invited to attend.

Attendees will be able to share a drink, meet new friends and learn of Illawarra community groups that strive to embrace and connect.

We Belong free community event will be held at Wests Illawarra’s Keira Room from 5 pm until 6:30 pm. To attend, RSVP via email at [email protected] or contact Flagstaff on 4272 0222.
