Albion Park residents will soon see work begin on the long-awaited Tripoli Way upgrade.

Early works to relocate aboveground electrical lines to underground are due to start from 24 February and are expected to take about four months.

Shellharbour City Council has assured residents the work will only cause minimal traffic disruptions.

The $60 million upgrade will provide an uninterrupted route bypassing the Albion Park town centre, connecting Terry Street in the east to the Illawarra Highway at Broughton Avenue in the west. It will include widening Terry Street to four lanes to Calderwood Road and two lanes to Tongarra Road at Tullimbar.

Ferrycarrig will undertake the key electrical works to prepare the road corridor for major construction later in the year.

Mayor Chris Homer welcomed the project’s move into the construction phase.

“This will be a win for locals and the community as the centre of Albion Park has become congested with traffic,” he said.

“This is an exciting first step towards delivering the road infrastructure needed to support our growing Shellharbour community for generations to come.”

The main construction tender will be advertised in coming months and major construction work is expected to start in the second half of the year.
