Every great business has a story, but not every business owner is telling it well – or telling it at all.
For the first time, Australia’s national screen and broadcast school is bringing its renowned storytelling course to Wollongong business owners, helping them craft compelling narratives that captivate their audience.
The one-day in-person Storytelling For Business course has been successfully running at the Australian Film Radio and Television School (AFTRS) in Sydney and online, sharing world-class storytelling skills.
Led by Wollongong-based producer, writer, director and AFTRS trainer Nick Bolton, the course for the Illawarra at the UOW Innovation Campus will teach participants how to apply filmmaking techniques to their business messaging, ensuring their stories resonate and drive success.
Nick said the course would help business owners in the Illawarra benefit from AFTRS’ expertise in delivering industry-relevant training right in their own backyard, especially now storytelling was considered an essential skill for anyone who needed to communicate effectively with prospects, customers, leaders or peers.
“This course is for anyone in business who has a story to tell, or a message to get across to their audience, but needs some assistance on how to do it in an engaging way that resonates with customers and clients, and results in better business success,” Nick said.
He knows only too well the power of storytelling in business.
Nick has consulted for corporate and government organisations, and is a seasoned entrepreneur having built several content and production businesses during the past 15 years, including online video distribution company Viocorp (now Viostream) and now running content production company TEN ALPHAS with co-founder Jess Milne.
He draws on this vast experience to share practical exercises and knowledge that help participants apply creative communications skills directly to their specific business message, helping them connect with their audience on an emotional level.
“Just as filmmakers use specific techniques to capture their audience’s attention, this course will show you how to apply these approaches to your key messages, and discover the power of storytelling to capture your audience’s attention to make these messages stick in a compelling and memorable way,” he said.
Storytelling For Business is suited to anyone aged 18-plus who is an absolute beginner through to master communicators, and will cover five key elements of a powerful story to capture an audience, how a story can make a message stick, and how to translate the techniques to deliver a clear and irresistible call to action.
Nick is also chair of Screen Illawarra and an AFTRS alum, having completed his Master of Screen Arts and Business in 2014.
Book your spot for Storytelling for Business on 28 March at the UOW Innovation Campus, Innovation Way, North Wollongong from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
