A man was tasered in Fairy Meadow following a police chase during which he allegedly smashed into two cars.
At about 5:30 pm on Thursday (26 June), officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were patrolling Squires Way, Fairy Meadow, about 4 km north of Wollongong, when they detected an unregistered vehicle.
A NSW Police spokesperson said the driver pulled over the car on Innovation Way, North Wollongong, before allegedly performing a U-turn and driving off.
“When he failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“The car drove through a number of streets, allegedly crossing onto the incorrect side of the road and reaching speeds of up to 90 km/h in a signposted 60 km/h zone.”
Police further alleged that during the pursuit, the car collided with two cars on Daisy Street, Fairy Meadow.
NSW Police Ambulance responded and assessed a female driver; however, she was uninjured.
Police terminated the pursuit for safety reasons.
“At about 5:35 pm, the car was sighted on John Street, Towradgi, and police re-engaged in the pursuit,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“The pursuit continued before the car came to a stop at the intersection of Fairy Avenue and Cabbage Tree Lane, Fairy Meadow.
“Officer attached to the Southern Operations Group tasered the driver – a 50-year-old man – before arresting him.”
The man was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with not stopping for a police pursuit, driving recklessly or furiously, exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 km/h, not stopping at a red light, driver never being licensed and breach of bail.
He was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Court today (27 June).
