Man dies in overnight Lake Illawarra house fire

A man has died in a house fire at Lake Illawarra overnight.

A NSW Police spokesperson said emergency services were called to Murrie Street, Windang, shortly after 11:50 pm on Tuesday (26 August), following reports of a house fire.

“Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District attended the scene and located a house well alight,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.

“Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the blaze; however, the home was destroyed and the structure collapsed.

“The resident – a man believed to be in his 60s – was unaccounted for.

“Following a forensic examination of the home, a body of a man was located.”

While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of the resident.

A crime scene has been established and police have begun an investigation.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
