Two men have been charged over their alleged involvement in the manufacturing and supply of “slam guns” in the Illawarra, following a five-month police investigation.
Lake Illawarra Police District detectives began Strike Force Alvie in April this year to investigate the manufacture and supply of home-made firearms, also known as slam guns, which are made from adapted materials.
“During the investigation, strike force detectives identified that these privately manufactured firearms had been sold several times through the Illawarra,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
“Police located and seized all these firearms as part of the investigation, including a triple-barrel firearm capable of firing a 12-gauge shotgun shell.”
On Wednesday (3 September) following extensive investigations, strike force detectives and Tactical Operations Unit officers arrested a 31-year-old man in Albion Park and a 52-year-old man in Albion Park Rail.
Both men were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.
The 31-year-old was charged with 12 offences, including unlawfully selling firearms three times or more within 12 months, four counts of supplying prohibited firearm to unauthorised person, four counts of manufacturing prohibited firearm without a licence/permit, manufacturing a prohibited weapon without a licence/permit, selling a prohibited weapon without a permit and intentionally causing fire and being reckless as to its spread.
The 52-year-old man was charged with manufacturing prohibited firearms without a licence/permit and intentionally causing fire and being reckless as to its spread.
They were refused bail to appear in Bail Division Court today (4 September).
