A Wollongong local’s love of a lunchbox staple has earned her the title of Australia’s Sandwich Superfan, with a showstopping outfit, song and music video dedicated to the humble sandwich helping secure her spot as the breadwinner.

For Daisy Knight, a simple sandwich feeds more than just her hunger, it also fills her soul.

Like many others, the food was a staple in her upbringing, whether it was in her school lunchbox or a snack made by her parents when she was sick.

“They just sort of became this symbol of comfort for me,” Daisy said.

“I really enjoy the variety of sandwiches, there’s so many different types that you can try, and combos – it’s like a neatly delicious bundle of goodness.

“And as I grew up I just kind of had this feeling that sandwiches are just always there for you.”

One day she started writing little ditties about a sandwich in her bag just to send to friends but it soon inspired her to keep capturing the marvel of the meal in a musical way.

“I thought sandwiches were an under-appreciated thing so I just started writing all of these songs about sandwiches and I recorded them all and they just sort of sat on my hard drive,” Daisy said.

“A couple of years later, I met my now boyfriend and I sent him the sandwich songs and he was like ‘these rock’.”

And just like that, Sandwich Magic was served up to the community.

“We go around and play at pubs and scream about sandwiches and it’s really fun. We have these handmade costumes and we throw bread out into the audience, it’s pretty great,” Daisy said.

The duo puts the roll into rock ‘n’ roll, celebrating their love of sandwiches in all its different forms.

“We played this really hilarious gig when it was the election, one of the polling places had us play for the people waiting in line to vote and we wrote this song called Democracy Sausage.

“And it was just the funniest thing, people were just stuck there listening to us.”

So when she heard that Subway was looking for Australia’s biggest sandwich fan, her sub-mission was going to be anything but sub-par.

“I had the idea to write a song and I thought it would be cool to make a visual to go with it,” Daisy said.

“I thought I’d make a really whacky subway outfit like a Subway royalty kind of gown, it will be really dramatic.

“I definitely got carried away … I started with the dress and then I was like – my head could be a sandwich! My feet could be sandwiches! I just kept adding more and more to it.

“I made custom sandwich foods that look like footlongs.”

And the prize for her passion … a lifelong supply of Subway worth $25,000 – that’s a lot of dough.

“I was so happy,” she said.

“I love Subway and at arts school I ate Subway every single day.

“When I made [the costume] I thought ‘this is kind of wild, I don’t know what Subway is going to think of this’ but the fact they liked it and they were just so nice, I just had the best time making it.”
