A ground-breaking ceremony has marked the start of work on the long-awaited upgrade of Yellow Rock Road.

The upgrade will improve the thoroughfare between the Illawarra Highway and Araluen Terrace, helping to improve road safety, pedestrian access and connectivity for residents.

The work will widen more than 600 m of Yellow Rock Road and includes new kerbing and guttering, additional car parking spaces, upgraded intersections and access points, a pedestrian refuge, shared path and improved lighting.

New signage and line marking will also be installed.

Shellharbour Mayor Chris Homer and Federal Member for Whitlam Carol Berry were joined by representatives of works contractor Cleary Bros to mark the start of work.

“I want to thank the Australian Government for its strong support of this upgrade and acknowledge Federal Member for Whitlam, Carol Berry, for her support for this road project and her ongoing engagement with our community,” Cr Homer said.

“Their investment through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, along with additional support from Road to Recovery, has been instrumental in getting this project to the construction phase.

“We’re grateful for this partnership, which will help us deliver safer, more accessible connections for the growing Tullimbar community.”

Ms Berry said the upgrade was a significant investment in local safety and liveability as Tullimbar continued to grow.

“Yellow Rock Road is a key connection for local residents and families, and this upgrade will make a real difference to safety and traffic flow,” she said.

The work is expected to take about six to eight months to complete.

Shellharbour Council says the pavement works will be delivered in three sections due to the size of the project. Section one will include Yellow Rock Road between the Illawarra Highway roundabout and the intersection with Wongawilli Street.

Section two will be the extent between Wongawilli Street and Hereford Chase intersections, while section three will be the remainder of works moving south from Hereford Chase to near Araluen Terrace.
