Shellharbour families have a new place to play for fun or fitness, with the official opening of a new inclusive playground at Terry Reserve in Albion Park, designed with direct input from the community.
Featuring shaded play areas, accessible equipment, and fitness facilities, the new space aims to bring families together while promoting active and social play for children of all abilities.
Among the engaging play experiences are a shaded tower and shopfront, an accessible see-saw, kanga rocker, voice tubes, and a premium double bay swing.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the features within the park were thanks to valuable community feedback that helped shape its design.
“The design of this new play space has been directly influenced by the feedback we received during consultation with the community,” Cr Homer said.
“Local families shared their ideas and needs and we’ve listened.”
In addition, shaded sails provide shelter from the sun, while native trees and shrubs were planted to provide natural shade.
He said the park also allowed families to sit and relax on a variety of formal and informal seating, or enjoy a brisk workout on the fitness equipment, then hydrate at the nearby water station.
“The new playground at Terry Reserve has been designed with both fun and comfort in mind,” he said.
“We’ve made sure to include plenty of shaded areas, so families can spend time outdoors, whether they’re playing or simply relaxing.
“This project highlights our commitment to creating spaces that are not only accessible and inclusive but also comfortable for everyone in the community.
“This playground will provide children with a safe, engaging, and fun environment that encourages creativity, social interaction, and healthy play.”
Building of Terry Reserve playground started in November and is a key part of Shellharbour City Council’s ongoing efforts to enhance parks and recreational areas within the municipality, offering a space for the community to enjoy nature and stay active.
“We know how important it is to create vibrant spaces where our community can come together,” Cr Homer said.
“With this new play space, we’re not only giving our kids a place to play but creating a shared area for families to connect, relax, and enjoy everything the space has to offer.”
In addition to the play equipment, families can enjoy the convenience of ample parking and pathways.
Terry Reserve playground is located at Grey Street in Albion Park within an active regional park.
