After numerous traffic accidents and population growth in the Albion Park area, essential safety improvements to Terry Street are planned for early to mid 2025.

It comes after news in November that works will start on another roads project, Tripoli Way Bypass, in early 2025 to connect Terry Street in the east to Broughton Avenue in the west, to allow commuters to bypass the Albion Park town centre.

Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the project continued council’s commitment to improving the safety and functionality of the city’s roads.

“Albion Park is a growing community, and Shellharbour City Council is committed to ensuring our roads are safe for our residents,” Cr Homer said.

“This project has been developed in consultation with the community since 2021 and has gone through multiple stages of feedback.

“It’s great to see the project is finally underway thanks to funding from NSW Government.”

Terry Street’s safety improvements are being funded with $643,000 from the NSW Government’s Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.

Classified as a regional collector road, connecting Jamberoo and Albion Park, the section between Wiley Street and Simpson Parade has been subject to several recorded crashes in recent years.

It is also subject to moderate-high pedestrian demand to cross the street.

Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program was a road safety infrastructure and speed management treatment program to deliver sustainable and long-term reductions in road trauma through upgrades of the existing NSW road network.

“The NSW Government is proud to be supporting Shellharbour City Council by investing in projects that help make our local roads safer,” Ms Watson said.

“Improvements set to be made to Terry Street will deliver better pedestrian safety and smoother journeys for motorists.”

To achieve this, improvements to Terry Street under the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program will include the installation of a roundabout at the T-intersection of Terry Street and Hughes Drive, implementation of one-way traffic flow within the shopping carpark, and installation of a raised pedestrian crossing at Wiley Street.

It will also involve constructing new infrastructure to be disability compliant, installing shared use path links to each of the upgraded crossing points, implementing left turn only on some side roads and relocating the existing bus shelter.

Development of the project comes after multiple stages of community feedback to help shape the design.

Works at Terry Street will be completed in one stage, with traffic control in place to help ease any associated disruptions to the current use of the road.
