Calling all Illawarra artists – the new Shellharbour Hospital wants you!
Artists who live, work or have a strong relationship to the Illawarra have been invited to be part of the arts program for the new hospital.
The program aims to create a welcoming and supportive environment for staff, patients, visitors and carers, according to Health Infrastructure, responsible for construction of the Dunmore facility.
“It will feature artworks that will give the new hospital a modern and distinct identity while celebrating the region’s culture, community, and landscape,” a spokesperson said.
“The artworks will feature in key spaces throughout the new hospital and will support a healing environment for patients, visitors and staff.”
The call has gone out to artists at all stages of their careers to submit an expression of interest (EOI) to be involved in the art project. Up to five artists will be selected to create work for the project, which is overseen by public art and placemaking specialist Cultural Capital.
Health Infrastructure acting executive director Nicolas Di Condio said the arts program for the new Shellharbour Hospital was an important opportunity to bring local identity into the facility’s design, reflecting the Illawarra’s unique culture and community.
“We’re proud to support an initiative that will positively impact the wellbeing and health outcomes of patients,” Mr Di Condio said.

“We know that integrating art into health facilities plays an important role in improving patient health and wellbeing.
“This is a unique opportunity for artists in the Illawarra to be part of a lasting legacy that improves the experience of patients, carers and healthcare workers every day.”
The project is also working closely with the Multicultural Health team and invites artists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to also express an interest before 15 September. Click here to apply.
