Artfully arranged over 46 hectares of untouched land, 38E Scotts Road, Upper Kangaroo River is a jaw-dropping monument to architectural innovation.

Renowned designer Alexander Michael has outdone himself with this luxurious “off the grid” retreat, positioned to capture the best of its sweeping rural and escarpment vistas.

The designer must have employed some kind of architectural sorcery to create a design so contemporary but still utterly sympathetic to the beauty of its natural surrounds, according to Kate McCullagh of DiJones Southern Highlands.

“How he has incorporated a decadent build into this pristine natural environment in such a seamless way – not many people would think to do what he’s done,” she says. “He has a reputation for unique projects, but this one is special.”

The scene is set by the eastern wall, which is in fact an aircraft hangar door extending the entire width and height of the home that, with the press of a button, folds up. This mean’s the centrepiece of the home – the aspirational open plan kitchen, living and dining space – can yawn open to invite nature in.

Characterised by an opulent use of concrete, glass and timber, the sheer scale of the home is astounding, with ceilings that Kate estimates reach 8 m high. “It’s the kind of thing you have to see to truly appreciate – pictures can’t do it justice,” she says.

Nature is your greatest inspiration in this home, where the rainforest at the rear comes right up to the back of the house, with undergrowth strategically cleared to transform it into a “living art installation”.

“You’re able to look straight into the forest,” Kate says. “This home is so unique that it will be interesting to see who comes out of the woodwork to claim it, but whomever it is, they will be a nature lover.”

Each of the four bedrooms of this freshly completed home has its own verandah and wood fireplace, and two have their own ensuite bathrooms, making it an intriguing investment opportunity for the lucrative short stay market.

Among the home’s many aspirational features is a heated, spring-fed plunge pool. Paired with a network of cleared hiking trails, old growth rainforest, waterfalls and dramatic cliff faces to explore, it offers wellbeing-seekers a second-to-none lifestyle.

After a day of exploring and a refreshing plunge, settle yourself in front of the fireplace for a cozy evening, set to the soundscapes of nature all around.

The home boats solar power, a substantial battery bank, a reliable Starlink internet connection and rainwater harvesting as well.

“If you’re a busy person with a big job and need a getaway where you can decompress, you won’t find anything better,” Kate says. “Being totally off the grid and self-sustainable holds great weight in this day and age.”

The home also has a separate, newly renovated Japanese-style studio, in its own unique and splendid setting.

Upper Kangaroo River is a highly exclusive southern pocket of Kangaroo Valley, a 10-minute drive to the local shops and amenities.

The price guide for this remarkable home is $4.95 million.
