It’s an exciting time for the Wollongong CBD, with the Globe Lane precinct set to undergo a transformation.
Works on initial stages of The Globe development are starting this month, and will see construction of a new City Diggers Club with the addition of a 114-room hotel.
The site will also feature an eight-storey office building, a valuable addition to a CBD that’s seen a 50 per cent increase in A-grade office space over the past five years.
A later stage of this exciting development will see the construction of a five-star hotel on the former David Jones site, adding a premium accommodation option to the CBD.

The developments will meet a vital need identified in Wollongong City Council’s Tourism Accommodation Strategy Review, which outlines an approach to building a diverse range of options for holidaymakers visiting our region.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Tania Brown said: “Wollongong has so much to offer, and this development will improve the city experience for locals as well as new opportunities for visitors.
“I think with the start of this project we’re at a real tipping point for Wollongong and this is going to be a catalyst for major change. It’s very exciting.’’
Early work on the game-changing mixed-use development begins this month, but the much-loved Globe Lane will remain open for business, offering its regular array of bars and live gigs, fine dining options, and vintage retail.
Council said it was committed to supporting these great local businesses that brought so much vibrancy to the CBD – and a major boost to the night-time economy – while allowing the much-anticipated Globe Development to take shape.

La La La’s owner and manager Nathan Stratton said great nights out continued to be the business’s focus as The Globe works started.
“Some major redevelopment on our block means that in the coming months and years there’s going to be a lot of work going on around the corner from us – but there’s going to be just as much as ever to see and do, drink, and eat at La La La’s and our Globe Lane neighbours,” Nathan said.
“With new events and live entertainment five nights per week, people can keep up to date with us on social media or just pop in – we’re open, as always, from 4 pm Tuesday to Friday and from 2 pm Saturday and Sunday; we are only a turn off Crown St away.”

While Globe Lane will remain open for business, works on The Globe will see some minor changes to access to the precinct from March.
This will include the closure of the Globe Lane underpass between the former David Jones Building and carpark, while Church Street toward Crown Street Mall will only be accessible from Burrelli Street for authorised vehicles, which includes taxis.
Globe Lane’s dining and retail businesses will remain easily accessible for pedestrians via the existing entrances from Crown Street Mall and Burelli Street.
There’s plenty going on in Globe Lane, from free shuffleboard nights at The Prince and weekly trivia nights at La La La’s to a delicious lunch deal each Friday at Santino.
