Much of southern Australia is set to embrace winter in all its fullness and shiver through the long weekend.
A cold front will move across NSW and the ACT, bringing wind, rain and chill as part of what Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Helen Reid calls a “particularly cold” weekend.
She said the system would blanket the ACT and southern NSW with winter chill as it moved through the region.
“Because it is such a significant change coming through, there could be a change [to the forecast] and there may be a warning in the coming days.”
Friday (6 June) in the ACT will dawn at -2 degrees, before reaching a high of 13.
The mornings will be slightly warmer over the long weekend – between zero and 2 degrees – while daytime temperatures will hover around 10 degrees.
“[It will be] not too cold on the Saturday, but showers will start to come into the region then,” she says.
It’s happier news across the border in the Snowy Mountains, where up to four or five centimetres of snowfall are expected.
“We’re not just talking [about] a dusting along the peaks. We’re actually talking about it being a reasonable amount to come down,” she says.
“This [snowfall] will be enough to make it feel like it’s white … it’s looking good for nice white imagery on social media this weekend.”
It follows the resorts relying on artificial snow for coverage as May came and went without much snowfall.

At Jindabyne, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 11 degrees on Friday, before dropping to between 5 and 8 degrees.
Cooma will start as low as -5 before rising to around 11 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, then dropping to 9 degrees on Monday.
Coastal communities won’t escape the cold either, with temperatures only rising to the teens across the Illawarra and Far South Coast regions.
Both Port Kembla and Wollongong will boast highs of 19 on Friday and Saturday, before temperatures drop slightly.
Further south, Bega will reach 18 degrees on Saturday, while Merimbula, Moruya, Eden, and Bermagui will also hit the mid to high teens.
“We’re actually expecting to see fairly widespread showers and rain through a lot of western NSW, [but] the coastline will be largely dry,” she says.
“It might get a couple of showers spilling over from the western side of the ranges.”
It means Riverina residents are in for a cloudy and windy long weekend, with some showers on the cards.
According to the BoM, Wagga Wagga will reach 14 degrees on Saturday (before dropping to a high of 11 for the rest of the long weekend), while Griffith will range between highs of 16 and 13 degrees.
