The Illawarra community is invited to a front row seat and firsthand experience at one of the largest sporting events to ever come to the region, with the World Triathlon Championship Finals calling for volunteers for the event in Wollongong next month.
Thousands of athletes and tens of thousands of supporters from across the globe will arrive on Wollongong’s shores in October for the crown jewel in the World Triathlon calendar but it’s set to need all hands on deck to help make it a success.
Event organiser Luke Palmer is searching for keen citizens from the Illawarra and beyond to volunteer at the event, with opportunities for anyone to get involved.
“Volunteering is a fun, exciting way to learn the ropes and experience firsthand the world of triathlon,” Luke said.
“So, whether you are a parent, student, work experience person, retired and looking for something to do, or even just a keen sports fan – volunteering is a great way to engage with the community and get to know people within the sport.
“There are many different roles to choose from – from registering the athletes in their races, to helping them go the right way on their run and bike courses, all the way through to providing them with food and water, post event. There is a role for everyone.”

Volunteers are a vital part of making and managing the event which will attract athletes and supporters alike, but it also boasts great benefits for those who put their hands up to help out.
“Volunteering provides numerous benefits for both individuals and the community and offers opportunities to learn new skills, gain practical experience, enhance existing experience, and even make your resume more appealing,” Luke said.
“Volunteering allows people to connect with like-minded individuals, expand their professional network, and build lasting friendships.
“Volunteering also boosts self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.”
Efforts will even be reciprocated to help support local initiatives or organisations in the process.
“As a gesture of thanks, we will help you fundraise for your schools, sporting groups, community groups or charities – for excursions, sporting events, equipment, programs and anything else that needs a financial boost,” Luke said.
“Over the years, we’ve been inspired to see the difference we can make through helping local schools, organisations and charities with our fundraising initiative and associated partnerships and in just the last 12 months [the program] has donated more than $100,000 back into the community.”
