A new fitness trend in the Illawarra has brought the beat back to exercise classes by combining the enjoyment of a big night on the town with the benefits of a workout.

Chloe Chapman has been a dancer since she was three and despite having tried other workouts and exercise classes, she could never replicate that same feeling of joyfulness at the gym that she felt on the dance floor – until she found Clubbercise.

“It still keeps that dance element in it and it’s super fun,” Chloe said. “Having the party lights and glow sticks just creates that vibe where it feels less like a workout and just feels like a fun time out. But you still get all the benefits.”

After discovering the popular UK franchise, the 21-year-old decided to offer the class in the Illawarra and show participants that staying active doesn’t have to be a hard slog.

“No-one wants to do something they don’t enjoy,” she said. “Having that element of fun gets you excited to go, you look forward to it and you know when you get there you’re going to have a good time.”

And just like your average dance floor at any club, you don’t have to be a good dancer to get into it.

“You don’t have to be any level of coordination at all, you just need to want to have fun.”

Anyone from 16 years old can participate. And it’s not just for the young, but also the young at heart.

“It’s perfect for any age group, it’s very much go at your own pace, take it as hard or as easy as you like. There are options within all the routines to do it at different levels and you can take breaks as you need them.

“I run it but my mum is 51 and she is the other instructor with me. So she comes to every class as well.

“It’s lots and lots of fun and it’s good having the two age groups. You get to see both perspectives when we’re doing things like picking new songs to include so you can make it for everyone.”

Hit tunes from across the decades are integrated into the classes with participants encouraged to sing along to their favourite club classics while they work out.

And while you’re bopping along to Britney Spears or Chappell Roan, Chloe said it could be easy to lose track of time.

“You get to the end and it’s like ‘is that it already?’ It just flies by.”

Chloe currently runs two classes a week at Horsley Community Centre, Monday morning and Thursday evening, and is keen to build the business as the word gets out.

“I really want it to feel like a fun safe space so they can come in, enjoy themselves, have a good time and interact with people as well,” she said. “Not just a place to work out but one to meet people and build up a fun community.”
