Centrally located, lovingly restored, with plenty of modern tasteful touches, 6 Devonshire is the perfect coastal home. Photo: Ray White Kiama.

Just a four-minute walk from the centre of Kiama, 6 Devonshire Street is a restored 1893 three-bedroom, one-bathroom miner’s cottage with a studio and wraparound verandah.

This cottage is an example of old-fashioned simplicity with a fresh airy feel and features that combine form and function.

This classic cottage with beach house vibes is perfectly situated, close enough to walk to the train station and the town centre. With easy access to the town’s cafes and boutique shops but set on a quiet street in beautiful heritage-listed Pheasant Point, it’s just a stone’s throw from the lighthouse, black beach and two ocean pools.

“It’s one of the most ideally placed homes in Kiama,” Matthew Lay, director of Ray White Kiama says.

The home has that classic cottage look, with timber construction, a timber wraparound verandah and a tin roof. It’s an Australian design that has stood the test of time, but the new additions make sure that it’s up to date.

“People adore these miner’s cottage-style homes, especially the high ceilings. But the owners have updated a lot about the property so it’s future-proof,” Matthew says.

Features like the split air conditioning system have brought the home into the 21st century and the 24.8 kW solar system ensures that the home practically runs itself.

“It’s a low-maintenance house; anything you’d want done has been taken care of,” Matthew says.

The roof space is lined and the attic storage area has an easy pull-down ladder system for easy access.

The house may originally be 19th century, but it has features and amenities, such as a modern Caesarstone kitchen with Miele appliances and a master suite walk-in robe as well as little aesthetic touches such as stained-glass accents that really add some personality to the living spaces.

The home has a beautiful airy feeling, achieved through those high ceilings and some recent work on the timber walls that make the whole home feel spacious and bright.

“The previous owners have done some really tasteful renovations; they also added the studio out the back,” Matthew says.

The studio is a great little private space and is an ideal retreat for an artist or reader looking for peace and quiet.

The detached studio also has floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors to let in as much natural light as possible.

Out the back there’s a private, hedged backyard, storage shed and of course the studio. But the centre of the outdoor space is the beautiful wraparound verandah, the perfect spot for weekend get-togethers, barbecues or breakfasts on a sunny morning taking in the harbour views.

“The verandah has a beautiful, elevated outlook over the township,” Matthew says.

The property is best suited for those looking to downsize to something simpler and easier to manage, empty nesters looking for a relaxed lifestyle home or someone looking for the ideal low-maintenance holiday home in a great spot.

If you’ve been on the lookout for an easy-to-manage modern coastal home in a great spot with history to boast about and a future to look forward to, 6 Devonshire Street is the property for you.
