A man will face court in March charged with impersonating a police officer after allegedly pulling over two vehicles in the Illawarra.

A NSW Police spokesperson alleged that at about 10:30 pm on Wednesday 14 January, an 18-year-old female driver was pulled over on the Primbee Bypass, Primbee by a man driving a grey Mitsubishi with red and blue flashing lights.

The man who was plain clothed, allegedly asked the driver for her licence, before taking her phone back to his vehicle and telling her he was giving her a warning for speeding.

The woman left the scene and reported the matter to Lake Illawarra Police.

Police allege that 30 minutes later, the man driving a vehicle with blue and red flashing lights pulled over a 21-year-old male driver on Cove Boulevarde, Shell Cove.

After he allegedly demanded the driver hand over his licence and registration, the driver left the scene and contacted triple zero.

Lake Illawarra Police started investigations and at about 9:30 am on Thursday (12 February) attended a home in Shiraz Drive, Dapto where they arrested an 18-year-old man.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with two counts of impersonate police officer and exercise powers/functions.

He was granted bail to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday 18 March.
