If you’ve ever wanted to find out more about the new green industries basing themselves around the Port Kembla Steelworks, this week’s National Science Week is the time to do it.
Inside Industry is offering free tickets on board its Clean Energy tours until Saturday, 17 August.
National Science Week, first held in 1997, is Australia’s annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss hot topics, ‘do science’, and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society.
The Clean Energy Tours show visitors how Port Kembla is transitioning to renewable energy and hydrogen.
The Port Kembla Hydrogen Hub and NSW Government’s Renewable Energy Zone boast more than $700 million in major energy projects that are due to be completed by the end of the year.
During the tour, visitors will see and hear about renewable energy projects that involve innovative science-based research and development, including Green Gravity’s research into the valuable power of gravity as part of the country’s energy storage solution.
Green Gravity is a specialised research facility that aims to gather performance data from its gravitational energy storage system for disused mines.
The tour also visits Australia’s first heavy vehicle hydrogen refuelling station at Coregas, powered by hydrogen and produced at Port Kembla from recycled water and renewable energy.
The guided tour travels through the Port Kembla Port and steelworks to take in hi-tech projects designed to aid in the progress towards zero emissions.
Award-winning company Hysata is among the organisations based in Port Kembla.
Hysata is working on accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels to green hydrogen by delivering the world’s most efficient, simple and reliable electrolyser.
Green hydrogen is a critical fuel for decarbonising heavy industry and electrolysers are the key technology to produce that green hydrogen at scale and lower cost.
The company’s new 8000 sqm manufacturing facility will house a state-of-the-art manufacturing line that will allow it to produce commercial-sized units slated for delivery from 2025.
Inside Industry is also offering a discount on its Steelworks and Working Port tours during Science Week until Saturday, 17 August.
