The St George Illawarra Dragons have joined the roster of sporting greats partnering with an Illawarra non-profit to project the message of strengthening men’s mental health, wellbeing and community connection.

The club has been unveiled as the presenting partner for the 2025 Healthier Illawarra Men (HIM) International Men’s Day Lunch, with the annual event attracting hundreds each year to raise awareness, spark conversations and support organisations within the local community.

“When it comes to leadership, community presence and values, the Dragons are a natural fit for Healthier Illawarra Men,” HIM chair Mark Sleigh said.

“They’re more than a football club; they show up for their community and for each other.

“We’re proud to stand alongside them to drive real conversations about mental fitness, healthy relationships and breaking down stereotypes.”

For the Dragons, the partnership is part of a broader responsibility to the region and the community in which the club has been built.

“The Illawarra is an integral part of our past, present and future,” CEO Tim Watsford said.

“Our players, our fans and our families are all part of this community and we have a responsibility to help lead conversations that matter.”

It’s hoped the prominence of the club and the high-profile players getting involved will help promote the important message further and impact more people.

And they’re in good company, with British cricket royalty Sir Ian Botham to be guest of honour at the event in November.

“It’s a fantastic cause, shining a light on men’s health, mental well-being, supporting blokes doing it tough,” Ian said in a video for the fundraising campaign launch.

“I’ve seen first-hand the power of talking, listening and showing up for each other – that’s what this lunch is all about.

“Bring a mate – it can change your life.”

Past lunch guests have included UFC champion Alex Volkanovski, shark attack survivor Brett Connellan, and wheelchair athlete and author John Maclean.

Funds raised at the event are invested back into the Illawarra community, with more than $350,000 raised since 2022 for programs that tackle mental health challenges, build emotional resilience, and support victims of domestic and family violence.

“Healthier Illawarra Men is doing incredible work to make that happen, and we’re honoured to be the presenting partner of this year’s event,” Mr Watson said.

“Our players are already getting involved, and we’re committed to helping build momentum around this vital cause.”

The 2025 HIM International Men’s Day Lunch is on Friday 14 November at UOW Hall with tickets on sale.
