A man has been charged over a fatal motorbike crash on the M1 near Figtree.

At about 11:10 am on Sunday 10 November 2024, emergency services were called to the northbound lanes of the M1 Motorway at Figtree, following reports of a three-vehicle crash.

A NSW Police spokesperson said officers from Wollongong Police District attended, and were told the rider of a Triumph motorcycle and the driver of a Ford Falcon utility attempted to merge into the same lane and collided.

“The impact caused the motorcyclist to lose control, and he was ejected from the motorcycle and collided with a white MG SUV,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.

“The driver of the Ford Falcon utility then allegedly failed to stop after the crash.

“Despite the efforts of first responders and paramedics, the rider of the motorcycle, a 66-year-old man, was unable to be revived and died at the scene.”

The NSW Police spokesperson said the vehicle has been seized and will be subject to forensic and mechanical examination.

“At about 9:40 pm on Friday night (15 November), police attended Power Drive at Mount Warrigal, where they arrested a 45-year-old man,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.

“He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with six offences – dangerous driving causing death, driving dangerously, failing to stop and help after a vehicle impact causing death, negligent driving occasioning death, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle and driving whilst suspended.”

He was refused bail and will reappear in court at a later date.
