Employee flogged almost $400k from Wollongong business, police allege

An Illawarra man has been charged with fraud and larceny after a two-year investigation.

A NSW Police spokesperson said a 44-year-old man will face Wollongong Local Court charged with three counts of steal property as a clerk or servant, dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception and knowingly deal with the proceeds of crime.

Police will allege in court that the offences took place while the man was an employee of a Stewart Street business and came to a total of more than $395,000.

“In February 2023, a report was made to Wollongong Police of alleged fraudulent transactions being made by an employee of a business in Stewart Street, Wollongong, and an investigation commenced,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.

“Following extensive inquiries, about 4:30 pm on Monday 2 June 2025 officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command stopped a vehicle on the Princes Highway, Maddens Plains, near Bulli Pass, and arrested the 44-year-old man.

“He was taken to Wollongong Police Station, charged and refused bail.

“Police will allege in court 82 fraudulent transactions were made by an employee of the business, totalling more than $395,500.”
