Wollongong Central is going paper-free in its three parking stations and introducing number plate recognition technology.
The rollout of the technology will begin with the P1 Keira carpark on 21 and 23 April, followed by the P3 Gateway carpark on 28 April and the P2 Crown carpark on 5 May.
The centre is bringing in licence plate recognition to reduce paper waste, streamline access and ease the frustration of lost tickets in the busy CBD location.
Ticketless parking works by scanning a vehicle’s licence plate on entry. After visiting the centre, customers pay at a machine or tap their card on exit with cost calculated by duration of stay as is currently in operation.
Regional asset manager Chris Travers said ticketless parking was an important step for the growing CBD, ensuring there would be adequate parking available for customers during peak periods along with a seamless transition in and out of the carparks.
“It is important we provide our customers with easy access to the centre and by upgrading the technology to provide ticketless parking we aim to provide better traffic flow within the sites while improving sustainability by reducing paper waste,” he said.
“We’re also maintaining the current parking rates to ensure customers can access central parking when they want to shop, dine or enjoy the centre.”
During the transition period, Wollongong Central will provide clear signage and additional carpark staff to help customers familiarise themselves with the new technology.
Last year Wollongong Central marked 50 years of continuous operation in the city.
