Corrimal’s favourite little green locomotive has been removed for some intensive restoration works.

The former South Bulli Colliery No 4 loco – known by some locals as the “green frog” – has sat in Corrimal Memorial Park for more than 50 years.

Built in England in 1909, it was originally used to haul coal from the South Bulli Colliery to the Bellambi Point jetty.

It ran until 1967, when it was placed into retirement. A year later the Bellambi Coal Co donated it to the Lions Club of Corrimal for installation in the park.

A Wollongong City Council spokesperson said the train had been taken off-site for work to remove rusted steel, before it is given a fresh coat of green paint.

The work is expected to take about four months.
