Green Connect’s labour hire and zero waste services arm has rebranded as Green Yakka, after a split with the farm.
Green Yakka is now part of national not-for-profit Community Resources, after the Green Connect Farm transitioned to become an independent entity in March.
The farm will continue to focus on growing fair food, while Green Yakka focuses on creating employment opportunities at scale through labour hire and zero waste services.
Green Yakka creates job opportunities for people experiencing barriers to employment across the Sydney and Illawarra regions, working with councils, businesses, developers and event organisers to deliver everything from bush regeneration and land care to site clean-ups, waste audits and sustainable event waste management.
It also helps clients meet their sustainability and social impact goals.
Community Resources CEO Marc Higgins said the name was chosen to tie the organisation to its roots and reflect its core values.
“The name Green Yakka speaks to our brand’s social and environmental purpose and to the hard, honest nature of our labour hire and zero waste work,” he said.
“Yakka comes from yaga, meaning ‘work’ in the Yuggera language of Meanjin (Brisbane).
“Our use of the word honours its Aboriginal origins and the cultural strength it carries.
“This brand gives us a clearer identity to grow, build partnerships and deliver even greater impact in Sydney and Illawarra communities.
“We’re proud of our shared history with Green Connect Farm and we’ll remain closely connected.”
Operations manager Robert Dale said other than the new name, there would be few changes.
“Green Yakka continues the work we’ve been doing for more than a decade as part of Green Connect,” he said.
“It’s the same people, services and purpose delivering hands-on work that tackles waste and creates job pathways for people facing barriers to employment.”
Green Yakka has the capacity and commitment to take on new projects and clients.
