Heavy rain across the Illawarra overnight, on top of consistent falls over the past week or so have left our ground soaked and waterways overflowing.
If you’re travelling between Port Kembla and Kiama today (21 August) take special care – several roads have already closed and others are flooded, but remain open.
On Thursday morning the M1 Albion Park off-ramp to Terry Street was closed, with flooding on Terry Street and Taylor Road.
To the west in Tullimbar, North Maquarie Road at the Illawarra Highway has flooded, and in Calderwood there is water over Marshall Mount Road near Calderwood Road.
At Primbee there is water over the road at Windang Road, just past King Street. Reports from commuters say this flooding is deep and best avoided if possible.
Dunmore Road near Buckley’s Road in Shell Cove has gone under.
Further south at Dunmore Swamp Road at Browns Road is heavily flooded. Swamp Road is also flooded near Jamberoo Road.
There is also water over Jamberoo Road at Factory Lane.
In Gerringong, Rowlins Street at Belinda Street has flooded.
A multiple-car crash on Picton Road at Cataract is affecting westbound traffic; everyone is urged to take care in the area.
The wet weather is being caused by a slow-moving high pressure system over the southwestern Tasman Sea, a trough over the northern inland plains and another trough near the coast bringing wet conditions.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast rain will ease over the weekend and into early next week, although some continued showers are likely.
The SES has urged drivers to take care on the roads over coming days, and for residents to prepare their homes to cope with the ongoing rain.
