Unanderra Library will close until early next year to allow for essential repairs and maintenance.
From Monday 9 September, booklovers will need to visit an alternative library to pick up their reading materials.
The project includes the replacement of roofing and drainage, the removal of hazardous materials and the replacement of the plasterboard ceiling and gable end linings.
As part of the works, the building’s interior and exterior will be given a refresh.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said library customers were able to use any of the city’s six other libraries.
“We know Unanderra Library is a much-loved community space and these planned works will allow it to continue to be an important space for people to borrow books, magazines and DVDs, to be a meeting space, and also a calm retreat in a busy world,’’ he said.
The library and its returns bin will close from 1 pm on Saturday 7 September to allow for the books and resources to be removed and reallocated to other branch libraries including Dapto, Warrawong and Wollongong.
The neighbouring Unanderra Community Centre will continue to operate at a reduced capacity. Residents should contact the centre (phone 4271 2213) for more information about their services, including the Food Pantry.
The building opened as the original Unanderra Community Hall in 1901 and has also served as a theatre operated by Wollongong Theatres.
Before the formation of the City of Greater Wollongong in 1947, it was the site of the Central Illawarra Municipal Council Chambers. It became a library in October 1955.
The library is expected to reopen in early 2025.
