It’s the most magical time of year, and homes across the Illawarra are adorned with decorations to celebrate Santa’s arrival.
From a classic, understated string of fairy lights strung along the front verandah to an explosion of light, sound and colour, everyone has their own way of preparing their home for the season.
One of the first to get their decorations up was Rod, who lives in Kanahooka.
His Exmouth Road home is festooned with lights, cut-outs and bright garlands.
A cancer survivor, Rod said he loves sharing the seasonal joy around his neighbourhood.
“There’s so much nastiness around the world, especially at the moment – it’s good to put a bit of happiness out there,” Rod said.
“We started three or four years ago for the grandkids. They love it, so we’ve done a bit more and more each year.”
Anyone who has taken a tiny person for their first Christmas light drive knows how it feels to see a little face light up in wonder – and how that can spread to bigger people, too.
