Kiama has nudged out neighbouring Wollongong to claim the title of NSW Tourism Association’s Top Tourism Town award for the third year in a row.
In winning the hat-trick, the town has earned a place in the prestigious NSW Tourism Awards Hall of Fame.
Wollongong was placed third behind Orange.
Mayor Cameron McDonald said it was a “rare honour and an incredible achievement for Kiama”.
“We pride ourselves on being a go-to destination for visitors whether they are coming to our town for a day trip, a weekend away or an extended stay,” he said.
“Kiama not only has plenty of places to visit but a special community where everybody is welcome whether you’re a local or from out of town.”
Kiama was also up against Shellharbour, Moree, Forbes, Coffs Harbour and Ballina in the category for a town with a population over 5000.
The award was announced on Wednesday (27 May) at the Local Government NSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference in Maitland.
Kiama Tourism proudly posted the win on its Facebook page, under the title WE DID IT!!!! THREE YEARS IN A ROW.
“The win feels extra special. Not because of the title itself, but because it reflects the people behind this beautiful town of ours,” the post read.
“The cafe owners opening before sunrise. The small businesses backing each other. The tourism operators creating unforgettable visitor experiences. The locals who proudly tell people, ‘You have to visit Kiama’.
“This award belongs to every single person who helps make our little slice of paradise feel so welcoming. To everyone who voted, shared our posts, cheered us on and continues to support local businesses across the region, thank you. Truly.
“Kiama might be known for the blowholes, beaches and epic scenery, but it’s the people, businesses and community spirit that keep visitors coming back again and again. What a town. What a community. We’re so very, very proud.”
Council’s Tourism, Economic Advisory Committee chair councillor Matt Brown said the visitor economy was essential to Kiama’s long-term future.
“Council’s Tourism & Economic Development team has worked tirelessly to continue to enhance our status as a premier tourist destination,” he said.
“This award is dedicated to their magnificent efforts.
“Tourism is such an important part of Kiama and our surrounding villages so it’s incredibly humbling to receive this award three years in a row and to be elevated into the Hall of Fame.”
Kiama’s Visitor Economy Strategy 2035 is on public exhibition until Monday 22 June, outlining a direction for the future of tourism and reinforcing council’s focus on a sustainable and high-quality visitor economy.
