Kangaroo Valley estate named for an English wood is suitably elegant

Some properties instantly capture the imagination. Wychwood, a four-bedroom, three-bathroom estate on two hectares of land at 95 Mackays Road in Kangaroo Valley, is one of those properties.

With a rustic design and features such as French oak floors, stone-clad fireplaces, bay windows in the dining room and French doors opening out to the outdoor space, the home has the character of a rural country estate.

“There’s a consistent design focused on elegant, earthy luxury in this property as well as a feeling of openness and light,” Belle Property agent Nick Dale says.

“That has been achieved through large doors throughout the home, which open to the outdoor space, while skylights throughout the home’s kitchen and living space make the place burst with natural light.”

The home has a large dining room, a sitting room, a home office and a large living space which opens out onto the outdoor entertainment area.

A segregated main bedroom at one end of the home, with an ensuite and a sitting room, provides a private, peaceful space.

Named after a forest in Oxfordshire, England, Wychwood has a fittingly sprawling outdoor space.

From the house, the property gently slopes down to the travertine-paved pool with a wisteria-clad pergola, the perfect setting for summer lunches and evening drinks.

The property also has a veggie garden, serviced by an automated irrigation system and a charming pond, framed by water plants and flowering trees.

“The gardens instantly get the imagination going. You can just see yourself walking around with a cup of tea in the morning, looking at the plants and enjoying the peace,” Nick says.

“And the veggie garden is quite extensive. The amount of time that went into creating it is considerable.”

Below the pool, itself flanked by a shrub garden, is an enclosed orchard with fruiting trees.

“There is absolutely nothing boring about this house; there’s something to get excited for just about everywhere. The orchard has apples, figs, apricots, plums, nectarines, pomegranates and mulberries,” Nick says.

The garden and orchard are serviced by a three-bay American barn style shed with power, hot water and bathroom facilities – absolutely ideal for home projects.

In addition, the home has a 6.6 kW solar system, a 64,000 litre water tank system, a backup generator and a spring bore water supply.

“The spring water comes out like a Texas oil well. It’s a really unique feature of the home,” Nick says.

The view from this property needs no superlatives. From the right-hand side, looking out over the pool, the view extends to Kangaroo Valley, taking in the hills, the valley floor, and the village.

“And the view to the left goes to the escarpment. It really needs to be seen to be believed; it’s one hell of a view,” Nick says.

“The home’s design puts the view centre stage wherever possible. The main suite in particular has a beautiful view out to the distant hills.”

Even though it’s an estate in the clouds, with country space and privacy, it’s still just 10 minutes to Kangaroo Valley Village and half an hour to Berry.

From the home, to the outdoor dining area, the pool, the grounds, the garden and the orchard, it all stuns.

“It’s one of the best homes I’ve ever seen. The owners have hosted weddings here and it’s easy to see why,” Nick says.
