The M1 Princes Motorway and Picton Road will be closed to all traffic on Sunday 8 December for work on the Mt Ousley Interchange, after it was delayed by rain in November.

The motorway will be closed from Bulli Pass to Memorial Drive, and Picton Road between the motorway and Almond Street at Wilton, from 8 pm to 4 am, weather permitting.

Work carried out during this closure will include pavement work, linemarking, installing temporary barriers and signs, and constructing site access gates.

Heavy vehicles over 19 m long and over 50.5 tonnes will not be able to access Bulli Pass and are advised to delay their journey.

Motorists travelling between Wollongong and Bulli Tops will be detoured via Memorial Drive and Bulli Pass and should allow up to 15 minutes additional travel time.

Motorists travelling between Wollongong and the Hume Motorway will be detoured via Memorial Drive, Bulli Pass and Appin Road, and should allow up to 40 minutes additional travel time.

Light vehicles can also use Wilton Road (Broughton Pass) between Appin Road and Picton Road or the Illawarra Highway (Macquarie Pass).

Local access to Mount Ousley Road between the Princes Highway and Gowan Brae Avenue will be maintained.

If weather again disrupts the closures, the work will be rescheduled for Sunday 15 December between 8 pm and 4 am.

Electronic message signs will advertise road closure dates in advance.

Meanwhile, work continues to demolish the pedestrian bridge at Northfields Avenue.

Work on the Mount Ousley Interchange will stop for the Christmas break from 20 December until 6 January.

The existing bridge ramp on the TAFE side of the motorway is being demolished and a new ramp will be connected to the existing bridge.

The bridge will be upgraded and extended to accommodate new infrastructure for the interchange.

The closure is expected to last until Thursday 19 December, weather permitting, when the bridge will reopen with temporary access.

Work on the interchange will continue through to 20 December when the project site will close for the holiday period.

Upcoming work will include extensive vegetation clearing adjacent to the motorway and in some surrounding streets including Mount Ousley Road and Dumfries Avenue.

Part of the southbound noise wall will be removed and a temporary wall will be built between Northwood Road and Dumfries Avenue.

Night work will be carried out between 7 pm and 6 am, Mondays to Thursdays, until Thursday 19 December, weather permitting.

During the work, traffic control, changed traffic conditions, lane and road closures and reduced speed limits will be in place.

Road users are advised to drive to the conditions and follow detours and the directions of signs and traffic control.

The project site will be closed from Friday 20 December until Monday 6 January 2025.

During this time, there will be no construction work, however reduced work zone speed limits will continue to be enforced.
