UPDATED 3:15 PM: A motorcyclist has died and another has serious injuries following two separate motorcycle accidents in the Illawarra on Sunday (10 November). NSW Police confirm a man, yet to be identified, died following the multi-vehicle crash on the M1 Princes Motorway at West Wollongong.

About 11 am, police were called to the accident involving two cars and a motorcycle, which closed the northbound lanes. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the rider but he died at the scene.

The driver of one car, a 24-year-old woman, was not injured, and was taken to hospital for mandatory testing. Her passengers, a 52-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man, were not injured.

Police want to speak with the driver of a Silver Ford ute, who may be able to assist with inquiries. The ute was last seen travelling north on the M1 at West Wollongong, about 11 am on Sunday.

Anyone with information into the incident or dashcam footage should call Wollongong Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

All northbound lanes of the M1 remain closed as crime scene investigations continue.

Police are directing northbound light vehicles onto Five Islands Road and Spring Hill Road to continue north through Wollongong.

Heavy vehicles should follow the direction of police and traffic crews on site.

Northbound traffic on the M1 was backed up to Berkeley and may take several hours to clear.

Traffic was also heavy on the Princes Highway between Berkeley and Gwynneville as a result of the incident.

About 1 pm a second accident involving a car and a motorbike occurred on the Illawarra Highway near the Macquarie Pass hairpin bend.

It is understood the rider was seriously injured but was in a stable condition.
