Man, 27, charged after alleged hit and run accident left pedestrian with brain injury

A 27-year-old man has been charged after an alleged hit-and-run at Fairy Meadow, only days after NSW Police appealed for the community’s help in finding the driver.

Antonio Spano, aged 57, was walking home near the intersection of the Princes Highway and Daisy Street near Fairy Meadow on Wednesday, 16 October, when he was allegedly hit by a car.

He suffered serious head and chest injuries and was taken to St George Hospital. On Friday (29 November), his aunt Silvana Repaci joined Wollongong Police to appeal for anyone with information about the accident to come forward.

Silvana said Tony remained in Liverpool Hospital with a brain injury and would need medical care for the rest of his life.

On Sunday (1 December), officers attached to Strike Force Nubrigyn arrested a 27-year-old man at Wollongong Police Station.

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – driver manner dangerous; failing to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm; not giving particulars to police and responsible person/custodian not disclosing driver’s details.

He was given conditional bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, 14 January 2025.
