A 48-year-old man has been charged after allegedly sparking a police pursuit through Illawarra’s northern suburbs on Australia Day.
Around 7 pm on Monday (26 January), police detected an unregistered motorcycle on Girvan Crescent in Corrimal allegedly travelling more than 30 kilometres an hour over the signposted speed limit.
Officers caught up to the motorcycle as it entered the Princes Highway at Corrimal and attempted to stop the vehicle. When the rider failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated.
“Police will allege the motorcyclist reached speeds of up to 90 km/h in a 60 km/h signposted zone, before the motorcycle came to a stop on Highlands Parade, Bulli, at the end of a cul-de-sac,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
“The rider allegedly dropped the motorcycle and fled into nearby bushland, before he was arrested following a short foot pursuit.”
The man was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with police pursuit -not stop, drive recklessly, never licensed person drive vehicle on road and use an unregistered Class A motor vehicle.
He appeared in Bail Division Court 3 today (27 January), where he was formally refused bail.
The man is set to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday (3 February).
