Man dies in workplace incident at Port Kembla Steelworks

A male contractor in his mid 20s has died after a workplace incident at Port Kembla Steelworks this morning (17 November) when it’s believed he was fatally struck by a steel beam being lifted by a crane.

A BlueScope spokesperson said the incident occurred just before 10:30 am opposite the No.5 Stockhouse.

“Emergency services are on site and we are cooperating with their investigation,” the spokesperson said.

“Our preliminary understanding is that a steel beam being lifted by a crane has fallen and fatally struck the contractor.

“Our immediate priority is supporting our people, the first responders and the family of those involved.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.”

The spokesperson said BlueScope would provide further information when it was able.
