On any given afternoon across the Illawarra, you’ll find 21-year-old Jala Widodo pulling up to a local driveway, cutting the engine and happily stepping into the back of his custom-fitted van.
Having spent five years honing his craft in standard shopping centre barbershops, Jala is now trimming away the old constraints of the trade. As the founder of South Coast Mobile Barber, he brings a fully equipped chair, sharp scissors, an even sharper eye for detail and two very switched-on ears, straight to his clients’ front doors.
His venture rests on a simple truth: no matter who you are, time is ultimately the most precious commodity.
“With me, you’re not just paying for the haircut, you’re paying for the time you save in the commute to the hairdresser, and the ability to slot a cut into whatever else is going on in your life,” he says.
“Most stores close around 5:30 or 6 pm, and a lot of people, especially blue-collar workers, don’t finish work until late. I normally start around 3 pm and finish around 7 or 8 pm, and I’m happy to cover those later hours for people.”
Yet for Jala, time isn’t just a performance metric — it’s a catalyst for his business, with deeply personal roots.
The inspiration to launch South Coast Mobile Barber came after Jala lost his father to terminal cancer. Grieving a parent at a young age reshaped his perspective on what truly mattered, instilling a profound appreciation for genuine human connection.
It’s why his van offers as much room for warm conversation as it does for sharp fades.
“You never really know what someone is going through,” he says. “Sometimes a haircut is just a haircut. Other times, it’s 30 minutes where someone gets to switch off, have a chat and feel good about themselves.”
That human-first approach takes Jala well beyond ordinary driveways. From wedding venues and weekend events to quiet hospital rooms, his mobile setup meets people exactly where they need it most.
“I’ve had clients in hospital beds who simply couldn’t make it to a shop,” Jala reflects. “Those visits are a bit different. I’ll pack up my gear and take the shop straight into their room.”
Looking ahead, Jala envisions expanding South Coast Mobile Barber into a full fleet of customised vans servicing the region. But no matter how big the operation grows, the core mission remains anchored in convenience, community and care — one driveway at a time.
