NSW Police have announced they will investigate a police pursuit near Shellharbour after a motorcyclist was flown to hospital with serious injuries.
A NSW Police spokesperson said the incident was referred to the Critical Incident Investigation team from Wollongong Police District on Tuesday (19 March).
“A critical incident investigation is underway after a motorcyclist was injured in a crash following a police pursuit near Shellharbour,” the spokesperson said.
“Just before 11 pm on Monday (18 March), an officer from Lake Illawarra Police District attempted to stop a motorcyclist on the Princes Highway, Croom, nine kilometres east of Shellharbour.
“Police directed the rider to stop, but when he allegedly failed to do so, a pursuit was initiated.
“The pursuit was terminated immediately due to the speed of the rider.
“A short time later, police found that the motorcycle had crashed into a median strip, with the rider, a 34-year-old man, sustaining severe leg injuries.
“He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.
“A crime scene has been established, which is being examined by officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit.”
An investigation has commenced into the incident by a Critical Incident Investigation Team from Wollongong Police District.
Those investigations will be subject to an independent review.
