A kitchen fire has led to a Mount Ousley man being charged with firearms offences.
A NSW Police spokesperson said emergency services were called to a home on Greenslopes Avenue about 7:45 pm on Sunday (1 March).
Fire and Rescue NSW personnel were responding to reports of a kitchen fire; however, after the fire was extinguished, emergency services found a number of firearms allegedly stored unsafely.
Officers attached to Wollongong Police District attended, declared a crime scene and executed a search warrant on the property on Monday (2 March).
“A number of items were seized for forensic examination,” the NSW Police spokesperson said.
“During the search warrant, police seized numerous firearms, along with numerous firearm parts, large quantities of ammunition and firearms-related paraphernalia.
“Also seized was $121,650 in cash, which police will allege in court to be the proceeds of crime.
“Following further inquiries, about 1:30 pm, police arrested a 66-year-old man when he returned to the house.”
The man was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with six offences.
These included three counts of not keeping a firearm safely, a firearms licensee not complying with safe storage needs, a holder of a firearms licence not having approved storage and dealing with proceeds of crime worth more than $100,000.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 3 on Tuesday (3 March).
