Musical icons who have inspired generations have been reimagined through the creative lens of artists with a disability in Greenacres’ annual Outsider Art Exhibition, now open in Wollongong.
From Madonna’s bold stage presence to Elton John’s moving tribute to Princess Diana, each artwork tells a personal story of admiration, identity and inspiration.
Opened at Project Contemporary Artspace in Wollongong to the sounds of Greenacres’ ‘This is Me’ choir, the exhibition follows the theme Music Heroes and celebrates the artistic talents of people with a disability through a collection of curated artworks of musical artists who have inspired them.
Led by Greenacres’ talented art therapist Victoria Velozo, the Outsider Art program is an innovative initiative that allows people with all abilities to express their feelings and experiences through various artistic mediums, such as painting, drawing, pottery and craft.
Victoria said the exhibition celebrated inclusion, creativity, and connection through art.
“Visual art and music have the power to break down boundaries and communicate in a way beyond just words,” she said.
“This year’s exhibition, focusing on musical icons that inspire, not only showcases the artistic talents of our participants, but also tells their stories.
“Each artist has a reason for choosing their musical icon – whether it’s their parents’ favourite musician or lyrics that resonate with them.
“By embracing and sharing these stories, we hope to inspire and foster deeper connections between our participants and the community.”

Among the musicians and stories captured were Ed Sheeran, due to the artist being a fan of his songs, and Elton John due to holding a special place in the heart of the artist after his legendary performance at the funeral of Princess Diana.
Legendary actress and singer Doris Day was also among the collection, along with Madonna due to the pop singer’s energy, attitude and bold on-stage performances.
In addition to the artworks on display and in line with the exhibition theme, the event also featured a special musical impersonator for entertainment.
Greenacres CEO Karen Burdett said the Outsider Art Exhibition had become a yearly tradition at Greenacres that the community now looked forward to.
“It enables many of our participants to open up and express themselves in meaningful ways they may not have been able to before and showcase their talent,” Karen said.
“The program brings not only joy and connection, but also a strong sense of purpose.”
Works are for sale through the exhibition.
Outsider Art Exhibition features the theme Music Heroes and will run until 27 July from 10 am to 5 pm daily at Project Contemporary Artspace, 255 Keira Street, Wollongong.
