A newly formed barbershop chorus in Wollongong is already striking a chord with its members, offering singers the chance to achieve that legendary a capella sound where the “harmonies ring and the hair stands up on your arms”.

Musical director Russell Bailey said the Barbershop Harmony Illawarra men’s chorus group had attracted a diverse mix of singers since launching in January — from seasoned musicians to enthusiastic newcomers looking for a fresh challenge.

However, they were now seeking more members to create an even bigger sound.

“We have a variety of singers. Some are already musicians or singers in other groups,” Russell said.

“Others can sing but have never really been in a group and were interested to get started with us.”

Woonona vocalist Claudio Lodi put out a call for singers last year to establish the chorus, hoping to revive the art of barbershop harmony in the Illawarra.

The original Wollongong barbershop chorus dissolved during the pandemic, resulting in Claudio spending a year driving to Penrith to satisfy his passion for harmonising.

With the support of Barbershop Harmony Australia, Claudio was able to launch the Illawarra group so he could sing closer to home, attracting 15 singers within three weeks.

As the group steadily grows, members are embracing the challenge of learning to blend their voices in tight, ringing four-part harmonies.

Russell said the response was overwhelmingly positive, with each singer eager to develop their skills and achieve a high-quality sound.

“We surveyed the singers about their reasons for being part of the group,” he said.

“They told us they are interested in high-quality singing, learning to harmonise, achieving a good sound, and improving their skills.”

He said each rehearsal brought something new, with the group’s growing repertoire including You’ve Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story, Two Strong Hearts by John Farnham, In My Room, made popular by The Beach Boys, along with an assortment of ballads and jazzier tunes.

“They say that they are getting a lot out of the group, and each week has something new or interesting to learn,” Russell said.

“They really enjoy the buzz of making a good sound and getting it right.”

In fact, Russell said the ultimate goal was to grow its membership and create the signature barbershop experience.

“We want to achieve that legendary barbershop sound where the harmonies ring, and the hair stands up on your arms,” he said.

“But just as important is enjoying the process. Camaraderie is an inescapable piece of the pie.”

Russell said they would also look to eventually perform publicly and compete in barbershop competitions.

For those curious about joining, he encouraged singers of all levels to give it a try.

“The members have friendly, enthusiastic energy,” he said.

“The sessions are high quality, with good leadership that is focused and passionate about building skills and making a great sound.

“It’s hard to explain how good it feels when you sing good a cappella. Once you experience it for yourself, it can change your life.”

The Barbershop Harmony Illawarra group meet on Thursdays from 7 to 9 pm at Keiraview Uniting Church Hall, 32/38 Fisher St, West Wollongong. Contact Claudio on 0407 012 721 for more details.
